چکیده
The MSc Intelligent Systems (IS) and the MSc Intelligent Systems and Robotics (ISR) programmes at De Montfort University are Masters level courses that are delivered both onsite and by distance learning. The courses have been running successfully on-site for 6 years and are now in the third year with a distance learning mode. Delivering material at a distance, especially where there is technical and practical content, always presents a challenge but the need to deliver a robotics module increased the challenges we faced significantly. There are two robotics modules though the second one is only available to those on MSc ISR. We have chosen to make the first robotics module, Mobile Robots, the focus of this paper because it was the first that had to be delivered and it is delivered to students on both programmes. This paper describes the rationale, delivery and assessment of the Mobile Robots module to students on the MSc IS/ISR with a specific focus on those students that are studying in distance learning mode. We believe it serves as a model for others attempting to teach robotics at distance.

Not gone, but forgotten: Helping users re-find web pages by identifying those which are most likely to be lost
We describe LostRank, a project in its formative stage which aims to produce a way to rank results in re-finding search engines according to the likelihood of their being lost to the user. To this end, we have explored a number of ideas, including applying users’ temporal document access patterns to determine the documents that are both important and have not been recently accessed (indicating ...
متن کاملROXXI: Reviving witness dOcuments to eXplore eXtracted Information
In recent years, there has been considerable research on information extraction and constructing RDF knowledge bases. In general, the goal is to extract all relevant information from a corpus of documents, store it into an ontology, and answer future queries based only on the created knowledge base. Thus, the original documents become dispensable. On the one hand, an ontology is a convenient an...
متن کاملDOCODE-Lite: A Meta-Search Engine for Document Similarity Retrieval
The retrieval of similar documents from large scale datasets has been the one of the main concerns in knowledge management environments, such as plagiarism detection, news impact analysis, and the matching of ideas within sets of documents. In all of these applications, a light-weight architecture can be considered as fundamental for the large scale of information needed to be analyzed. Further...
متن کاملSupporting Effective User Navigation in Digital Documents
Electronic documents such as PDFs are becoming increasingly popular as we move further towards the notion of the paperless office. The harsh truth however is that e-documents differ greatly from their physical paper counterparts, with many users opting to print them before reading. This paper describes several novel implementations that utilize a technique known as ‘lightweight interaction’; a ...
متن کاملHow do users evaluate individual documents? An analysis of dimensions of evaluation activities
Evaluation is an essential component for information retrieval and searching. Evaluation can be investigated on two levels: search result and individual document evaluation. In this study, the authors focus on the evaluation of individual documents. While search result evaluation refers to the identification of useful or relevant documents from the retrieved results, document evaluation refers ...
